How will GM Win Back the American Public?
I was thinking about the Today Show interview Matt Lauer did with Mary Barra from General Motors. First of all, shame on you Matt for asking her if she could be a good mom and run GM. How many times have you ever asked a male CEO that question?
As far as GM goes, I think that they need to win back the American public. First give Americans their jobs back by not opening plants in Mexico. Second, be completely honest whenever there is a safety issue. Third, show Americans what they loved about the cars in the first place.
They need to push those nostalgia buttons to show Americans that they want and appreciate our business. Using Chevrolet as an example, here’s a concept for a commercial:
Cue the music: “Beach Baby” by First Class. Songs opens up with the lyrics “Do you remember back in old L.A. (oh oh oh), When everybody drove a Chevrolet…”
Scene opens with 60’s beach scene of a young man leaning on his Chevy and spotting a beautiful girl.
Next scene shows them getting into their Chevy and riding off into the sunset with a just married sign and cans tied to the back of their car.
Next scene shows them getting into their Chevy as they go to the hospital when she is about to give birth to their first child.
Next scene shows them in them Chevy on a family road trip vacation singing songs as they dive.
Next scene shows them driving their son off to college in their Chevy with a tearful goodbye.
Next scene shows them driving up in their Chevy to their son’s house for a family BBQ, with a wife and kids of his own and his family Chevy car parked in the driveway.
Final scene shows the much older couple, close up gazing lovingly at each other with the camera from the back seat, driving their Chevy off into the sunset with a “Just Married Again” sign on the back of their car.
And boom, that’s how it’s done. So how about giving me a job in your creative department, GM?
